Top 25 AMAZING things on Earth that we still don’t understand.
The wonderful thing about archaeology is that it provides insight into events that occurred on Earth many centuries ago. One further wonderful thing is that occasionally a mystery will be discovered for which there is no conclusive answer. The results are quite surreal when you add in an odd structure or strange-looking artifact.
These are 25 oddities discovered on Earth that elude explanation.
The buckle of Loki
I’m going to start this journey through the mysterious and ancient by looking at some fascinating relics. starting with this particular one. Loki is still alive! It’s possible that some of you only know this as a Marvel Comics character. But there is another version of Loki in ancient Norse mythology. This specific picture of him was found on a belt buckle that was uncovered at the Viking settlement of Ågård in Denmark, not on Disney Plus.
According to reports from 2017, it’s believed to be the first item based on Loki to be discovered here; others have only been discovered in Sweden. It is worth noting that there have been reports of seeing portrayals of Loki in Norway. These reports are difficult to confirm, and for good cause. Since the naughty and disruptive Loki is a tale, it is impossible to determine if he ever lived. And in what shape did he take if he did? There are even many who question whether the discovery made in Denmark actually represents him. In either case, it remains a fascinating riddle.
Saqqara Bird
We may marvel at some very amazing-looking structures and artifacts that the ancient Egyptians left behind. The problem is that our understanding of what was happening at the time is limited to educated guesses. One example of this continuing mystery is the Saqqara Bird. It has been around for almost 2,200 years. Do you recall the classic Superman statement, “Is that a bird? Is that an aircraft?Since the wooden figurine was found in the late 1800s, researchers have been confronted with precisely that conundrum.
People think the figurine portrays an ancient Egyptian aircraft because of its design, which resembles a glider. Even built prototypes have yielded varying degrees of success. Some people are positive that the Saqqara Bird is a toy or something similar. We really can’t be certain.
Old-fashioned aircraft
Continuing with the aircraft theme, these intricately carved gold items date back to Ancient Egypt. Some believe they depict animals. Others think they depict a remarkably advanced aircraft design from 500 CE, or the Common Era—a term derived from the period around Christ’s purported birth. Another term for it would be AD, which is Latin for “in the year of the Lord.” Whatever you choose to call them, the archeological community is baffled by these so-called trinkets.
The Battery in Baghdad
Although batteries are often believed to be a relatively recent development, were they around thousands of years ago? This is the fascinating query that the Baghdad Battery raises. German archaeologist Wilhelm König discovered it in the late 1930s. He found the alleged battery in Iraq, southeast of Baghdad. It appears to be a six-inch-tall clay pot from the outside, but if you look inside, you’ll see a rolled-up copper sheet that holds an iron rod. Why do people believe that this strange-looking but intriguing device is a battery? since it has the ability to produce electricity, although only a few volts of it. This is accomplished by adding a mildly acidic liquid—vinegar, for example—to the container. By reacting with the iron and copper, the mild acid allows you to power a very little car. The part regarding the car was a lie.
Sites with historical significance are frequently home to enigmatic objects. For instance, the ancient Iranian city of Ctesiphon was within the discovery range of the Baghdad Battery. Let’s examine a few more astounding places where individuals who were similar to us formerly lived, worked, and love.
Atomic crater
This peculiar piece of limestone appears to have been crafted by hand. Rather, it appears that the remarkable geological sight was generated by nature. Regardless, that is the theory. The exact cause of the Patom crater’s formation is unknown. It is approximately 140 feet high and 520 feet wide. Taking its name from a local feature, the Patom river in cold Siberia, it deters nature. It’s also known as Fire Eagle’s Nest because it stands out and exudes an unsettling, ethereal atmosphere. The crater appears to have formed some several hundred years ago, which is not very old.
The magnificent block of rock was first observed by us in 1949, when Russian geologist Vadim Kolpakov made the discovery. One natural explanation for the crater’s formation is a steam explosion brought on by subterranean activities. Unnatural theories include UFO sightings. Not surprisingly, is it? In my opinion, it resembles a huge belly button. Perhaps a monster from a Ray Harryhausen film took a nap and died before the surrounding forest could grow? I might be getting close to there.
Nazca lines
Although you may not understand what a geoglyph is, you have undoubtedly seen one. They are commonly shaped like people or animals and are captured in aerial photos. They can be fashioned from materials such as rocks. Alternatively, you could remove items rather than place them on display. What am I trying to say? Well, the Nazca lines in Peru are a good illustration of this.
The Nazca “artists,” who date to the Common Era, between 500 BCE and 500 CE, drew their inspiration from the scenery. When you pick up the stones that cover the ground, the hue of the ground is the same as the white lines. There are many different forms of life, lines, and shapes present, but the purpose of the lines remains unexplained to this day.
Unknown Hill
It’s common to imagine remote locations for historical sites from antiquity. Some, nevertheless, are really near to home. If you happen to be in the United States, you should definitely check out Mystery Hill, a location in a distinctly non-exotic part of New Hampshire. The hill, which is made up of stone formations like walls and caverns, never fails to astound visitors. Is it a 4,000-year-old megalithic astronomy platform constructed by Native Americans? Or is it more recent? There are many who argue that it was installed as late as the 1800s.
Not so interesting fact: the location is in Salem, the well-known haunt of witches and the people who hunted them. That gives it a spooky feel! Mystery Hill is sometimes likened to the historic site of Stonehenge in the United Kingdom. It is referred described as “America’s Stonehenge” as a result. If only Spinal Tap was aware of this location!
The rock’s face
Since 2008, this peculiar characteristic has been catching people’s attention. The face—or what appears to be a face—was discovered on Reek’s Island in the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve in Canada. A kayaker happened to see it there. It appears that no one has been near the about seven-foot-tall rock enough to provide a conclusive evaluation.
Because of this, it is challenging to determine if it was produced by humans or by natural processes. Additionally, there may be a connection to the Tseshaht First Nation of tribes, who have a lengthy history in the region.
Gobekli Tepe
Göbekli Tepe in southeast Turkey is another enigmatic stone structure. The name means “Belly Hill” when translated. It was originally found in the 1990s by German archaeologist Klaus Schmidt. These carvings are said to be approximately 11,000 years old, and they are believed to mimic Stonehenge. Like the plateau it is built upon, it has t-shaped pillars made of limestone. There were also discovered stone implements. The buildings seem to have been constructed by hunter-gatherers during the Pre-Pottery Neolithic Period, although their true function is lost to the passage of time.
It’s reasonable to presume that Göbekli Tepe’s building was inspired by some sort of religious activity. Klaus Schmidt thought that rituals were carried out there, and more recently, signs of human habitation have been found. It’s among the world’s oldest specimens of its kind.
Ica Stones
The Ica Stones entered Dr. Javier Carbrera Darquea’s public eye care program. His collection of over a thousand items began in an unexpected way. A Peruvian peasant approached the excellent doctor back in the 1930s. He extended a stone that had a fish motif on it. And not just any fish. This one seemed to exist before there were any humans. Who then created the image? From the Doctor’s perspective, this suggested that these representations might have been made by aliens. Or humankind was older than previously believed.
These fascinating stones, which have the name of the Peruvian province of Ica, were left behind by this self-proclaimed expert who lacked archeology training. It’s safe to assume that not all were persuaded. Fascinating stone-based images that Dr. Carbrera Darquea collected depict surgery, pornographic content, and yes, dinosaurs. But a lot of people would wager a farm on the idea that it’s all fiction!
Stone head from Guatemala
You’ve probably heard of Easter Island’s massive stone heads, but what about Guatemala’s? It’s a country in Central America. This stunningly beautiful Caucasian face can be seen in the country’s southern jungle. Considering the history of the area, these traits most definitely don’t seem local. You can’t help but be in awe of the detail and the amount of labor that must have gone into crafting it, even with its eyes closed and nose pointed skyward.
There is not much known about the head, other than the fact that it was discovered more than a century ago. Dr. Oscar Rafael Padilla Lara revealed its existence to the world after learning of it from explorers decades after they had first recorded it. There isn’t any proof that this functionality is genuinely old. However, there’s no proof that it isn’t either!
Brae Skara
We are now traveling to the Skara Brae region, which is colder climate. This Neolithic settlement, located in Scotland’s Orkney Islands, has amenities like beds and even a toilet. The most enigmatic aspect of it all is this: what became to the people? Experts estimate that approximately 2500 BC, under unknown circumstances, the Stone Age community was abandoned.
Who made the discovery? Indeed, nature was a major factor in this. It is said that a storm carried a dune away in the middle of the 1800s. Skara Brae settlement lay beneath it.
Angkor
The ancient Cambodian metropolis of Angkor was yet another amazing forest find. The preindustrial metropolis is thought to have supported a million or so people. It used water as a power source as well. Even though it’s well kept, the mystery surrounding it remains. This is emphasized by the fact that it’s unclear why the area changed from being a bustling metropolis to being abandoned and taken over by nature.
Kites
Though they aren’t as old as kites, they nevertheless have an air connection. By this I mean that people flying over the Middle Eastern desert have seen them from a great height. The term came from what the pilots saw, which looked like an image of a kite. Naturally, there were people down there who built the low stone walls that have baffled specialists for decades.
The walls have been known to us since the early 1900s. The forty kilometers or so that the country-spanning structures extend. A notion that claimed the walls served as animal traps had been devised by the twenty-first century. When the poor victim encountered the obstacles, it would be led to a slaughterhouse of some sort. Like any of the items on our rundown, this makes sense, but the verdict is yet out. Perhaps we’ll never be certain!
Temples in Ggantija
There is a group of megaliths located on the island of Gozo, which is part of Malta. The largest are about twenty feet high and are composed of limestone. According to reports, experts are shocked at how such a large structure was built by ancient peoples. The question of who constructed the Ggantija temples is up for contention, nevertheless. They pass the mysteriousness test, having lived for well over 5,000 years. Even still, it’s somewhat strange to imagine that a bunch of giants is responsible for the stones. I suppose huge ideas require big people.
We are unable to travel back in time and discover the precise person who constructed these incredible buildings or left behind such incredible treasures. However, there are artifacts that provide insight into the lives and activities of individuals. Naturally, there are occasions when this evidence is really perplexing and strange, which just helps to increase the mystery.
Artifacts from Sanxingdui
The story was developed more than fifty years after they were originally brought to the attention of contemporary listeners in 1929. China was home to the Sanxingdui culture some 3,000 years ago. Among other things, they left behind stunning objects made of stone, bronze, and jade. For unknown reasons, the Sanxingdui left their home, although it’s noteworthy to see that many of their wonders were interred in pits. One of their creations is this head, which has an amazing appearance.
One especially interesting aspect of the archaeology is that a sewage worker made the first discoveries. Undoubtedly a dirty job, but it proves that you don’t need to be a renowned academic to make a truly amazing discovery.
Unidentified Royal Interment
It is estimated that this very interesting Upper Paleolithic burial occurred 34,000 years ago. At the Russian site of Sunghir, two kids were buried among members of a hunter-gatherer group. The two men seem to have been interred ceremonially, with fox fangs and spears among their decorations.
The children showed signs of disability, which is quite intriguing. Although their identities are unknown, they were undoubtedly significant group members based on the circumstances of the burial.
Man “E”
Is there anything weirder and more unsettling than an old, dried-up mummy? How about an ancient, dried-out mummy whose face seems to be screaming? Discovered in the late 1800s, it is undoubtedly the stuff of nightmares. And I mean it when I say “uncovered.”
To allow specialists to identify the Ancient Egyptian find, it had to be de-mummified. When they saw that face, they might have wished they hadn’t tampered with those bandages. Ouch!
Cannibals
It’s common knowledge that an extinct Neanderthal had thick, set features and behaved like a caveman. But did you realize that some of these individuals were mutually predatory? This doesn’t seem to be the case everywhere, as there have been reports of cannibalism in certain places but not in others.
One such instance was the discovery of human remains in a Belgian cave, which unmistakably belonged to a murder victim and cast doubt on the Neanderthals’ myth of being primitive. The people who lived in caves were not only cannibals, but they also made tools out of the residual skeleton and supposedly consumed bone marrow.
Massacre at Borg in Sandby
A surprise attack killed the residents of a Swedish village in the fifth century, and their bodies weren’t found for centuries. Sandby Borg is an Iron Age ringfort, which is a prehistoric community formed up in a circle. The unfortunate victims were mercilessly murdered; yet, the reason for the atrocity remains a mystery. This is an intriguing illustration of an archeological discovery that is simultaneously a peculiar riddle and extremely specific in one sense. We know a fair amount about the area and its residents. We’re not sure why their lives ended in such a brutal way.
As promised, here is a list of unusual things that have happened, and so far, the stories are very weird. Still, now is the moment to go full historical crazy. The video’s next segment presents one astounding revelation after another.
The Costa Rican Spheres
The Central American jungle is home to these perfectly formed spherical freaks. The biggest is much larger than that, while the tiniest is only a few inches. In ancient Costa Rica, or the region that would become Costa Rica, the spheres would be arranged in lines at the entrance to the homes of those in positions of authority. A few of the balls had a diameter of seven feet. Does power increase with ball size? Who knows?
I hate having to think! It is evident that they are composed of sandstone, limestone, and gabbro rock. They’re obviously veiled in mystery for something with such a unique appearance.
Hobbies
After mentioning Loki previously, it’s time to talk about another popular franchise character. Hobbits this time. Not the Middle Earth creatures per se, but an old collection of skeletons that date back to a minor branch of early humans known as Homo floresiensis.
Amazingly, it wasn’t until 2003 that we learned about these tiny humans when they were found on the Indonesian island of Flores. Although it provided little in the way of explanation, this discovery expanded the field of human development. Somewhere, but where, do they belong? It seems that they inhabited the island about 100,000 years ago. Indeed, their large feet and short legs resembled those of Tolkien’s Hobbits.
Crystal skulls
The crystal skulls are more than just a story device in the films starring Harrison Ford. The journey of Indiana Jones was inspired by a true story of weird archeology. These are connected to ancient Mesoamerica since they are made of quartz. The Spanish overthrew these strong civilizations, which included the Aztecs, and took over Mexico and Central America in the sixteenth century. I’m sure they sculpted the crystal skulls for a purpose that meant something. The skulls are striking and a touch frightening.
However, we know very little, if anything, about what the people who made them thought.
An arm of wood in a well
In Northamptonshire, England, what was an arm doing at the bottom of an ancient Roman well? The two thousand-year-old arm, which was fashioned from a tree branch and was remarkably well-preserved, was situated at an industrial development of all locations. Is the arm, believed to be from a long-lost wooden body, proof of a sacrifice made to the Roman gods? The strange discovery wasn’t made until 2019, and I have no doubt that it will continue to boggle the minds of specialists for years to come.
A nuclear reactor in nature
Building a nuclear reactor doesn’t always require a construction team. All of this is possible because of Mother Nature. How did we find out about this amazing fact? The ancient world and archeology are our sources of gratitude.
Experts from today’s technology discovered this reactor in a mine in West Africa, where it developed independently of human intervention. In actuality, it somehow predates our species. It is estimated that the Oklo Mine reactor is around two billion years old. How could it possibly work? It started producing thermal energy when minerals related to uranium and clay came into contact with one another. The minerals were then dissolved by floodwater, which carried them underground and into the water supply. Uranium was absorbed by algae. The abundance of uranium-rich algae produced a critical mass, which in turn sparked a chain reaction. After atoms and neutrons performed their work, the rest is history.
I am not able to provide you with an in-depth explanation of how a modern nuclear reactor operates. We’d spend some time here. Just staring at the notion that something like this could exist in the absence of any lifeless carbon rods is sufficient. There is, of course, an explanation, but is it truly plausible? This story, in my opinion, is astounding and quite unreal.
